Interview
How they got involved
- Colin Hay said: "I made a couple of tour with Ringo. I drive along the freeway, Santa Monica Boulevard and they called me and they said 'Dou You want to go on tour with Ringo' and this one of those moment, Fuck Yeah ! Of course I do, you know. And that was me and Paul Carrack played keyboard and John Waite played bass and Sheila E. played drums and Ringo. And I haven't met him before the first rehearsal and we're playing all these songs. I was the only guitar player and never been known for my incredible lead guitar playing. But I learn all the parts. And the first song we have to do was called 'Never Without You', a new song of Ringo, a song about George and got an Eric Clapton solo on it and so the first, first time I ever met Ringo, he said let's do 'Never Without You' and I said it's great boss, a song that got an Eric Clapton solo on it. Don't worry Colin, it's your version of Eric solo, do your solo, it's cool man, do your version of Eric solo and I said so ok and we played the song, get the solo and fucked it up, even at a point where Ringo goes 'ooh ooh'. And after that Paul Carrack said don't worry boss, Colin was just doing Eric Idle [One of the Monty Python] Version of the solo"
- John Waite said: "Someone wanted me to go back to playing bass and I was going, WHAT? And then I got a call from someone saying, 'You played bass in The Babys ...' and I said, 'yeah'. 'You want to play with Ringo Starr?' and I said, 'yeah'. And I put the phone down and I thought ... 'no .... ' (LAUGHS). [What have I committed to?] This is Ringo Starr!"
- John Waite said: "Well, It was crazy, I got a phone call, I just been on the road with Peter Frampton and Journey and have made quite a lot of money and I thought I'm gonna buy a place. So I bought a place in Santa Monica two thousand square feet and sitting here now and the phone rang (...) the phone rang and said Do You want to go on tour with Ringo (...) and I thought I used to be a bass player, I could play bass you know and I was thinking about it, they make an offer, if I do the tour, I will have never any debts, you know. So I jump in and see what happened. So about three months later, we've all end up in Toronto and rehearsed for two weeks and it came out pretty good. Sheila E was in it, Colin Hay, Paul Carrack was fantastic. It was a very good band"
